MTV’s reality television show Jersey Shore has become a guilty pleasure for a lot of people. The guidos of the Shore present themselves as real-life caricatures of people most of us find hard to believe actually exist, but they do. Behind the tanning bronzer, industrial strength hair gel, fist pumping, and Ron-Ron Juice, there is a slightly mad genius to the way these guidos go creeping (the show’s slang for “picking up”). Here is a list of 10 ways to pick up on women–Jersey Shore style.
1. Always remain confident: Confidence is literally the number one thing a man should have when approaching a woman. Mike a.k.a. The Situation sure has a lot of it, and from what is shown in many episodes, his charisma and charm has worked on many of the ladies of Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
2. Just be yourself: Instead of hiding behind a guise of being something you are not, why not embrace who you really are like the guidos do. It is hard not to admit that even though these guys may seem ridiculous at times, at least they are comfortable with who they are. You do not have to be a guido, just yourself. There is a woman out there who will love you for it.
3. Avoid using pickup lines: The guidos on the show rarely use pickup lines, which is the last resort of trying to get the attention of a woman. Do you think a line like, “You must be tired because you’ve been running through my mind all day,” actually works? Very unlikely. It is better to just go by the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) method and straightforwardly introduce yourself to her.
4. Have a wingman near you: According to Mike a.k.a. The Situation, “When you go into battle, you need to have some friends with you, so that just in case a grenade gets thrown at you, one of your buddies takes it first.” A “grenade” is a metaphor for the less attractive friend of the woman you are interested in. Having a wingman nearby gets rid of distracting factors you may face when trying to pick up on her.
5. Keep yourself fresh and clean: G.T.L. is the philosophy The Situation and Pauly D. live by daily. What is it? It is an acronym for Gym, Tan, Laundry. Although you do not have to follow this rule to a T, it is always good to take care of yourself physically and practice good hygiene and grooming habits (check out how Pauly D. styles his blow out every day). Women do appreciate a guy who does not smell like he has not taken a shower in 3 days.
6. Don’t be afraid, be bold: Yes, it can be nerve-wracking to gather up the courage to talk to women due to the fear of being rejected. However, being bold is a key factor when talking to them. Do not be afraid to take risks. Jersey Shore’s guidos do have a lot of swagger and bravado to them, though, sometimes this leads them into sticky (if not hilarious) situations like in the episode where the “grenade” was first introduced on the show.
7. Don’t just stand there, dance!: Why just stand at the bar to meet women when most of them are on the dance floor having fun? Take a cue from the guys and make your way to the dance floor to meet women. If you stay stuck in the same area when at a bar or club, you are excluding part of your female demographic. By dancing, it shows a woman you know how to have a good time. However, you do not need to fist pump or emulate Ronnie’s creepy patent moves to do this.
8. Try not to discriminate: In the episode where Vinny contracts pinkeye, he says, “I don’t give a f*ck if you’re fat, you’re ugly, you’re 45 years old, I’ll dance with you. ‘Cause it’s hilarious.” Just because a woman is not particularly your “type,” this does not mean that you should not talk to her. Try to remain open-minded, and you may be surprised with what you end up with.
9. Make yourself presentable: You cannot just go up to a woman in a t-shirt with stains on it and a pair of sweats. If it were the opposite and a woman came up to you dressed like that, you would be put off by her too. Even though Ed Hardy t-shirts and gold chains may not be your style, the Jersey Shore guys wear what they think looks good and feels comfortable on them. Try to do the same and wear clothes that make you feel and look good.
10. Never give up: Being the Casanova of the group, The Situation is never short on numbers in his little black book and spent some nights calling up women to only be rejected many times. The thing about him is that he never gave up and kept trying until someone agreed to go out with him. So no matter how many times you feel the sting of rejection, do not give up and lose hope; keep on trying until you find someone for you. However, try not to come off as desperate or overbearing. Most women are turned off by this.
