As an independent single woman who has been financially on her own since she left for college, I am used to paying for everything in my life completely on my own. No help from the parents. No help from boyfriends. Just me sometimes working 3 jobs to pull it all off, but I make ends meet.

So, when it comes to dating I’ve gotten really used to dating on the cheap. The summer is the BEST time in the city to date because there are so many free movie screenings, plays, dances, concerts, festivals to keep a person entertained. Its so easy to suggest an afternoon picnic in the park as a date. Pack up some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, a water bottle, some fresh fruit, and cookies and you’re pretty much set for a laid back date in Central Park. More »

I should probably explain what happened with Michal.

Short Recap: I was super excited and giddy when we first started dating. I had crushed on him for a year before we went on our first date. Within the first real month of us going on dates, people were already referring to us as boyfriend and girlfriend. He was already planning a trip for the two of us at the end of July. More »

‘Would telling the truth or telling a lie bring about the better consequences?’

I came upon the article above and it got me thinking about my dating life.

I lie. Technically a sin but there are philosophical debates about “appropriate” times to lie and what lies are “white lies.” I don’t like to lie. I’m not very good at it which is fine because in all areas of my life I don’t need reasons to be deceitful…except when it comes to lack luster dating. The following are some of my most often used and/or favorite excuses to use in order to flee a scene.

1. “I have to cat/dog/baby/plant sit.” This excuse has come in handy during those dates that start off ok and then sort of turn into something I want to escape from. You can just as easily pretend like you forgot and suddenly jump up and rush out after looking at your watch and realizing the time. More »

Friday February 12th was shaping up to be just another Friday. I was stressed about meeting a deadline at work, bummed a date had canceled for Saturday night, excited about a date with Michal that was still on for later that night, pumped for a long training run Saturday day, cynical about the upcoming Valentine’s Day hooplah, sick to my tummy from eating too many Dove chocolates a co-worker had brought in (I kept eating them to read the Martha Stewart quotes on the inside of the wrappers). About a week ago, this guy who I’d been hooking up with for about four months and I both finally realized we were getting attached. My crazy single life was at the risk of ending, but as it turns out we wanted to deal with the situation differently: characteristically I wanted us to be exclusive and he wanted us to actively see other people.
