My parents joke that it’s going to be impossible for me to find you because I have such a long list of qualities and expectations for you to fulfill. It starts like this: you should be taller than me, have at least a college education and some kind of ambition, not be politically or religiously dogmatic, have a healthy sense of humor, been in relationships before, and so on. Arlen contacted me via a dating website. We got along well enough in e-mail and I couldn’t really tell what he looked like other than he was decent looking. In all his pictures it was either of his profile, sort of far away, or he was making silly faces.

In person, he was hot. Totally hot. His profile pictures had not done the man’s physical appearance justice, at all. He was the first date I’ve been on in a loooooooooong time where I felt instantly physically attracted to him before having spoken a single word to him. 6′ -1″, broad shoulders, 5 o’clock shadow, rugged handsome, outdoorsy, light brownish blonde wavy hair, pale brown eyes that look like maple syrup in a glass container when the light shines through.

Fausto texted me and invited me to his place for a “romantic” home cooked dinner and wine. I hadn’t figured out a way to politely tell him that I never wanted to go on another date with him since he had basically told me he doesn’t value the sanctity of marriage, so I fell back on an old standby excuse, “I have the stomach flu. I’m staying in. All weekend.” The next day I was greeted with a lengthy e-mail (3 full pages when printed out) that started with a simple compliment about how “stunningly beautiful” I am both inside and out which then dissolved into a diatribe against eating meat which boiled down to how smart pigs are. He explained how much he liked that he was dating a vegetarian (dating?!?!? Uh oh buddy) and signed off the -mail with this sentiment:

“At it’s most basic, I suppose, first we fall for partners, then we slowly find out who we have fallen for.” More »
